Monet, with his painting ''L'impression'' in 1874, established the Impressionist movement of the end of the 19th century. The important changes of the art style at this time almost went unnoticed. Most artists depicting Impressionalism remained poor and misunderstood. Renoir was one exception.
His voluptuous red-haired nudes agreed with the public of the time. Other representatives like Monet, Degas and Gauguin with the use of brilliant colours mixed with brownish and dark paintings frightened the public. Van Gogh, today one of the most famous artists of all time, with his expressive luminosity of colour and blotchy brushwork was the model of Expressionist painters at the turn of the century. Van Gogh's paintings which were not saleable during his lifetime, are today auctioned at very high prices. Impressionism, which is characterized by the spontaneous, light touch of the brush, still boasts a large number of followers.
